IAQ Solutions

Dynamic provides three IAQ Solutions that address all three types of airborne contaminants:

  • Particles
  • Odors and VOCs
  • Biological Contaminants

Often, indoor air quality problems are from poor outdoor air quality. Especially in urban areas, ventilation air brought in to meet minimum ventilation air requirements can be contaminated with ultrafine particles (UFPs), odors, exhaust fumes, or a combination thereof.

1. Ultrafine Particle Removal

With particulates, the most dangerous and troublesome particles are the smallest particles. Biological contaminants (e.g. mold, bacteria, and viruses) are a subset of particles. There are a number of sources, both inside and outside, that MERV 13+ filtration can help control. Sources include everything from peeling citrus fruits to vacuums and photocopiers.Fine particles contaminants include:

  • Vehicle Emissions
  • Diesel Exhaust
  • Jet Engine Exhaust
  • Tobacco Smoke
  • Fine Dust
  • Mold Spores
  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Black carbon (soot)

In any space, the number and weight of contaminating particles are inversely related: A few big particles make up the bulk of the mass, while the millions of ultra-fine particles which cause the most health problems make up the bulk of the particle count, but just a tiny fraction of the mass (See Figure 1). Coils and equipment are prone to damage from larger particles and historically that is what filters were designed to protect. Dynamic Air Cleaners protect much more than just the HVAC equipment. Our lungs and respiratory systems, as well as very sensitive electronics are more susceptible to problems arising from the sub-micron and ultrafine particulate. Particles in these size ranges bypass your body's defenses and can carry with them a wide variety of VOC's and reactive gas phase contaminants.

Figure 1. Particle Count and Mass Distribution

Dynamic Air Cleaners use active-field polarized media to remove even the smallest particles from the air. Polarized filtration greatly improves air cleaning performance due to the three-dimensional loading of particles to media fibers, as opposed to one-dimensional trapping seen in traditional passive filtration. Another inherent mechanism of polarization uses particle agglomeration whereby ultra fine particles become polarized after passing through the air cleaner and as a result of polarization are attracted to each other, in addition to other chemical contaminants, to form bigger particles that are subsequently captured. This mechanism gives Dynamic Air Cleaners their superior ability to capture ultrafine particles. Treated air becomes cleaner than outside air. In testing performed in an office building equipped with Dynamic V8 Air Cleaning Systems in downtown Washington, D.C., ultrafine particle levels were 92-99% lower than the levels in the outdoor air.

For this reason, effectively cleaning indoor air allows using the ASHRAE 62 IAQ Procedure to reduce ventilation air requirements. This can save money by reducing fan energy and also by reducing equipment horsepower requirements.

2. VOC and Odor Removal

Dynamic Air Cleaners have proven successful at removing VOCs and odors. Using active-field polarization and particle agglomeration, particles that become polarized after passing through the polarized media are attracted to other particles, VOCs and odor molecules to form larger particles that are subsequently captured.

Gas phase contaminants also have a number of sources. Inside a building they can come from furnishings, cleaning supplies, paints and finishes, and people. Outdoor sources tend to be from combustion processes; vehicles, kitchen exhaust, diesel generators, etc. Common VOC and odor problems include:

  • Cleaning Chemicals
  • Furnishings Off-Gassing
  • Paints & Finishes
  • Tobacco Smoke
  • Adhesives
  • Body Odors
  • Urine
  • Human Waste
  • Pet Odors
  • Tobacco Smoke
  • Chemicals
  • Formaldehyde

Dynamic Air Cleaners achieve MERV 15 performance that clears the air dangerous ultrafine particles and biologicals, reduces VOC's and odors, and accomplishes this at a third of the operational cost of conventional passive filter alternatives.

3. Biological Contaminants

Dynamic Air Quality Solutions Sterile Sweep Germicidal UVC Lamps can be mounted to Dynamic V-Bank Air Cleaners and Dynamic V8 Air Cleaning Systems to provide effective control of airborne organisms including:

  • Viruses
  • Bacteria
  • Molds and Mold Spores
  • Pollen
  • Dust Mites
